About this author
According to Thompson Cooper's article in the DNB s.v. "Sheldon, Edward (1599-1687)," Sheldon "translated from the French:
1. ‘The Holy Life of Monsr. Renty, late Nobleman of France, & sometimes Councellor to King Lewis the 13th,’ London, 1658, 8vo, ‘mangled by an Irish priest when it went to press;’ reprinted, with corrections, 1683. The author was Jean-Baptiste de Saint-Jure. [this book]
2. ‘The Rule of Catholick Faith,’ by François Veron, D.D., Paris (verè London), 1660; reprinted 1672. [listed in EEBO record as translated by "E.S. Esq."]
3. ‘Christian Thoughts for every Day of the Month,’ London, 1686, 12mo. [Wing B3823A]
4. ‘The Counsels of Wisdom,’ by Nicholas Fouquet, marquis de Belle Isle." [This is a mistake by Thompson Cooper; Fouquet's work of this title, Conseils de la sagesse, ou Recueil des maximes de Salomon. Paris, 1683, 2 vol. in-12 (Wing F 1650), was translated by E. Gage in 1694. The work by Michel Boutauld, S.J. (1604-89), is the one translated by Edward Sheldon, published in 1680 (Wing B3860A).]
