Judith Siefring writes:

The catalogue record for Wing c7212, "Rebellion rebuked in an answer to a scandalous pamphlet entitled The Quaker converted to Christianity &c.", states that the image set is "Imperfect: Pages stained with some loss of print. British Library copy spliced at end. " The first set of images is from the copy held at Harvard. However, in the process of editing the TCP text I noticed that the errata for the BL copy is different from that of the Harvard copy, which indicates that the two may well have a number of differences. Given that this is the case, is it desirable for the two to be spliced together in this way?

Peter White responds:

The differences between the Errata statements in the Harvard and British Library copies of Wing C7212, which are both available in EEBO in their entirety at reel position Wing 1354:02, seem not to have been noted previously.  Like EEBO, the English Short Title Catalogue (ESTC) currently (as of 17 October 2011) records only one edition of Rebellion rebuked (described at http://estc.bl.uk/R27638) and treats - or appears to treat - the British Library and Harvard items as two instances of the same edition.  There is currently no discussion of the variant forms of the Errata statement in ESTC or EEBO.

The Errata statement on p.56 of the British Library copy (here) reads as follows:

PAge 3. line 22. for banes read bands, page 4. line 13. for which read with.  And where any other Faults or Defects are escaped the Press, the Unbyassed Reader is desired to Correct them according to the Sense of the Matter, and none to impute them to the Authors.

The Errata statement on p.56 of the Harvard copy (here) reads as follows:

PAge 3. line 22. for banes read bands, page 4. line 13. for which read with.  P. 31. L. 38. For ontrary r. contrary.  P.37. L.31. for Babe r. Babel.  P.39 L.14 for withou twith r. without with.  P.41. L.36. for Burthen r. Burthensom. And where any other Faults or Defects are escaped the Press, the Unbyassed Reader is desired to Correct them according to the Sense of the Matter, and none to impute them to the Authors.

These variations will be brought to the attention of the EEBO and ESTC cataloguing teams.  Many thanks to Judith Siefring for sharing this information.

Anna Battigelli:

It may be interesting to note that each of the corrections listed in the BL copy's longer list of errata has been inserted manually into that copy.  Two corrections may have been made in the Harvard copy, though the first especially is indistinct: see "contrary" p. 31, l. 38 and "Babel" p. 37, l. 31.

The BL copy has splotches (perhaps ink from the active emender?) on pages 5 and 6, making the Harvard copy helpful for reading those pages.  I see the logic of providing individual entries for these copies.  It will be interesting to hear what the EEBO and ESTC cataloguing teams decide.

Peter White:

The EEBO cataloguing team has confirmed (18 October 2011) that it will treat these copies as variants, each with its own catalogue record.  The single set of Document Images currently available at Wing 1354:02 will be divided into two (to form e.g. Wing 1354:02a and Wing 1354:02b).  These modifications will become apparent in a future update to the EEBO service.
